Just a week after the triple murder in Fushë-Krujë, the town of Milot was shaken by another serious criminal event, at the center of which was once again Ylli Brahimi.
On the evening of July 22, 2022, Brahimi was traveling in an armored car, accompanied by his 28-year-old friend, Klisman Preçi. He was ambushed and hit with blind-piercing automatic fire. In this attack, Klisman Preçi lost his life on the spot, while Brahimi, the target of the assassination, was injured.
After the incident, a vehicle suspected of being used by the perpetrators was found burned in the village of Gramëz in Kruja. Two weapons used in the incident were found in the vehicle.
At that time, the police searched Sidorel Prendi's apartment, but he was not found there. His father, Gjovalin Prendi, was questioned as a person with knowledge of the incident.
"In this specific case, you rightly said that some events may have occurred in the past, but there has been no report, for any of them. None of the persons have been taken as defendants that perhaps the media suspects may have occurred. And in this sense we are faced with the next victim without having a proceeding against the suspected person," said Ermal Hamataj, lawyer.
"The police and the prosecution have separate roles, but also complementary roles. The separate roles are that the police deal with the investigation, the prosecution of the case, the provision of evidence, but in the meantime it is the prosecution that creates the strategy of the criminal prosecution and what will be done to uncover this event," said lawyer Dea Toçi.
After the next search of Sidorel's house, his father stated at the time that his son had not had any open conflicts with Ylli Brahimi. He said that Sidorel had been abroad for a long time, emphasizing that he had not had any contact with his son for a long time. He emphasized that Sidorel's first wife, Antigona Brahimi, was Ylli Brahimi's cousin.
The perpetrators of the next assassination attempt on Brahimi were never identified, leaving the incident unsolved. Sidorel Prendi, known as "Rohan Brahimi," has not been specifically charged with any of these criminal events. His name is mentioned in the operational information, but the lack of evidence keeps him out of criminal prosecution. The only possible connection is with the murder of Gentjan Bejtje in Fushë Krujë, where his brother-in-law was arrested.
"It turns out that Sidorel Prendi was not in Albania during that period, he may have been one of the people who was interested or who organized his elimination, he had an interest in the execution of Gentjan Bejtja, but he was not in Albania and he may have engaged other people" - said Alban Qafa, lawyer.
According to the data, there are suspicions that he was one of the people who organized the assassination of Bejtje, a well-known name in the underworld, known for his clash with Durim Bami, and as a person close to Ervis Martinaj.
Gentjan Bejtja was executed inside the courtyard of his apartment, in front of his wife and two minor sons. After approaching Gentjan Bejtja, the perpetrators opened fire on him, shooting him point blank, and pouring at least three Kalashnikov magazines into him.
"Gentjan Bejtja was spoken to and it was explained how the conflict occurred, with Nikla's group, after it happened with the Lezha group, with Arben Ndoka, as it was suspected that he was their informant who opposed Durim Bami's group," said Alban Qafa, lawyer.
"We have seen in some files of the Special Prosecution, therefore I say that the investigation in Albania, and especially in such sensitive issues as organized crime and the murders that come as a result of it, needs a different investigative approach, which the special prosecution should take, the fact is that it has not done so and it should go towards the orderers, who were the other interested parties to eliminate Gentjan Bejtjan," said Xhevahir Zhabina, journalist.
Experts at the scene determined that 72 automatic weapon cartridges were found scattered in the yard, while 30 shells were identified on the victim's body, which testifies to the intensity and brutality of the attack. After the incident, the perpetrators' vehicle quickly left towards Fushë Krujë and then to the village of Hasan, where it was found burned.
"Vehicles are burned to leave no trace, because in those cars they have left fingerprints, they have left DNA, they can leave cigarette butts, hair, saliva, or a drop of sweat. They are burned to lose traces," said Alban Qafa, journalist.
"There may come a day when all structures from the police, the prosecution and then the court can cooperate to minimize, I'm not saying it will be completely eliminated, but to minimize precisely their role and involvement in such crimes, which I believe are factors that lead to crime after crime," said Dea Toçi, lawyer.
After the crime, the suspected perpetrators fled in a Volkswagen without a license plate on the back, which was later identified with the license plate AB960GG as it followed the route Thumanë-Fushë Krujë-Tirana-Durrës.
After reviewing dozens of security cameras, investigators have identified the people who used this vehicle and who are suspected of having helped the perpetrators escape after the assassination. Edison Haxhiu, accused of "providing conditions to commit murder," and Ilir Beqiraj, accused of "unlicensed possession of weapons" and "forgery of documents," were arrested.
Security cameras verified the movement of this vehicle in several key areas, including luxury residential complexes in the Lundra area of Tirana, more specifically in the apartment of Beqiraj and his sister, Rohan Brahimi's wife.
On 15.03.2024, at 10:36 (it cannot be determined whether the time on the recording device is the same as local time or not) the Volkswagen Golf vehicle with license plate AB960GG enters the premises of the "White House" residential complex, in Lundër, Tirana, where the villa/apartment of citizen Antigona Sadik Brahimi (sister of citizen Ilir Sadik Beqaraj) is located and after returning, it leaves the premises of this residential complex again. Meanwhile, at 09:39 this vehicle appears in motion leaving the "Long Hill" residential complex, where the villa/apartment owned by citizen Ilir Beqaraj is also located.
"The negligence that occurs in receiving reports regarding stolen cars or license plates, on the other hand, has led criminal groups to create this background, to create this practice, and it has now become commonplace, a car stolen in one city, an event that occurred in another city, a car is found burned after a day or two and the perpetrator is not found," said lawyer Ermal Hamataj.
"The car, it has entrances and exits to the apartments of his close people, his family, certainly leads to the idea that he could be one of the organizers. I think that this is where the work of the Albanian Prosecution and Police fails, since all the indications point to Sidorel Prendi, but is Sidorel Prendi the only character interested in Gentjan Bejtja being eliminated, I have the impression that he is not," said journalist Xhevahir Zhabina.
4 days after the incident, Edison Haxhiu was caught washing the car in which the perpetrators allegedly fled at a car wash in the Lundra area.
Following the investigation into Bejtja's murder, authorities conducted numerous searches in the homes of several suspects or people connected to the incident. Searches were conducted in the homes of citizens Marklen Haka, Fatmir Koci, Valter Bami, Vat Caka, Albert Sinanaj, Shefqet Kullaj, Gazmir Saka and Fatmir Bami./ InsideStory
