The city of Saranda has been cordoned off by around 50 police forces, who have landed from Tirana and Vlora and have been conducting an operation for several hours to capture the much-wanted 43-year-old, Ramadan Zoto alias Ramadan Canaj.
The wanted person is the author of the attempted murder of two people with a gun on Thursday, upon whom he opened fire 4 times, leaving them wounded on a main street of neighborhood no. 4 in Saranda. The checks of the operational forces, FNSH and "Shqiponja" have been carried out yesterday in the village of Gjashtë and today in the early hours in several apartments on "Butrinti" street in Saranda, but without success.
Ramadan Zoto, known as Dane, wounded Gëzim Hajdaraj, 33, and Ernest Lamen, 25, both from Kamza, with a pistol after a previous conflict. Hajdaraj was also armed but failed to fight back. The two injured were transported in serious condition by helicopter to the Trauma Hospital in Tirana.
Who is Ramadan Zoto?
Ramadan Zoto alias Ramadan Canaj, is considered a highly dangerous person in Albania and Greece. His name is first mentioned as a witness in an incident in 1997, when a young man from Saranda clashed with a police officer in the city's market. In April 2005, he shot and killed Albanian Pushkin Kuspa in Athens, while 3 years later he exchanged fire with the Greek police.
In Greece, he is also involved in armed robbery. In 2019, he was caught with a stolen vehicle, weapons and drugs in Athens, and after being released from prison, he moved to Saranda. Here, he was prosecuted once for “disturbing public peace” and later arrested for “assault in the course of duty.”
Along with Zoto, the police are also looking for 3 people for "supporting the perpetrator of the crime." One is his brother, Erjon Canaj, 36, and two friends, Artan Murtaj, 43, and Klaus Jaçaj, 31, all three with various criminal records.
