Italian authorities carried out a major anti-drug operation in the Italian capital on Thursday, arresting eight people on suspicion of drug trafficking. The operation was coordinated by the Rome Regional Anti-Mafia Directorate and executed by the capital's Provincial Command's financial officers.

According to the official announcement, the detention order was issued by the Judge for Preliminary Investigations and involves persons suspected of participating in a criminal organization aimed at the illegal trafficking of drugs, mainly cocaine. Investigations conducted by the Organized Crime Investigation Group (GICO) revealed that the group was led by an Albanian citizen based in the Netherlands, who supervised the trafficking via encrypted messaging platforms and operated within the EU, including Italy.

According to the investigations, the group had created a cell in Rome with a hierarchical and functional organization, which dealt with receiving shipments from couriers, managing deposits and distributing drugs in several neighborhoods of the capital, including Borghesiana, Pigneto, Spinaceto, Torre Spaccata, Alessandrino, Tor De Cenci, Finocchio, Capannelle and Tor Bella Monaca.

Vehicles prepared with secret doors were used to transport the cocaine, with the help of the owner of a local concessionaire. Investigations have uncovered over 210 kg of cocaine, of which 130 kg have been seized, with a street value of around 1 million euros, leading to the arrest of 3 people, one Italian and two Albanians, in flagrante delicto.

Authorities emphasize that precautionary measures were taken during the initial investigations and the defendants are considered innocent until the final court decision.
