Cristiano Ronaldo had one of the most touching moments of the evening after Portugal's victory over Croatia in the World Cup. Immediately after the match, the Portuguese captain hugged Luka Modric, his former Real Madrid teammate, to encourage him after the Croatians' elimination.
Footage of the two legends chatting on the pitch made the rounds on the internet, while Ronaldo later revealed the words he had said to his friend.
"I played with him for so many years, we are almost the same age. He is a football legend because he still plays very well and with high quality. I have told him so many times congratulations for everything, it's nice to see you again, I wish you all the best for the next years of your career," declared the Portugal captain.
Croatia's elimination was accompanied by strong emotions for Luka Modric. The midfielder left the pitch in tears, overcome by disappointment and fatigue after a dramatic challenge, in what may have been his last appearance for the national team.
With five World Cup appearances and 202 appearances for Croatia, Modric is closing out an extraordinary era, leading a country of around four million people to the elite of world football thanks to his vision, technical quality and leadership.
In the end, the hug between Ronaldo and Modric became one of the symbolic moments of the evening, demonstrating the mutual respect between the two footballers who have written history together in the Real Madrid jersey and who continue to be considered among the greatest figures in modern football.
