Portugal secured qualification for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after defeating Croatia 2-1 in a match that ended in controversy.
The biggest debate came in the 102nd minute, when Josko Gvardiol scored the goal that would have tied the scores at 2-2. Initially, the winger considered the action legal, but after the intervention of VAR, the goal was canceled for a suspicious offside position.
According to reports, the main referee was not shown the view from behind the goal, from which he could have assessed whether Matanovic had headed the ball before it reached Guardiola. In the end, the decision to disallow the goal was also based on data from sensors integrated into the ball, technology used for the first time in this edition of the World Cup.
This was the second decisive VAR intervention in Portugal's favor during the match, after the system had previously confirmed the penalty from which Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equalizer.
With the 2-1 success, Portugal secured qualification to the round of 16, where they will face Spain in the Iberian derby of the tournament.
