"Don't look for enemies where there are none"/ After Iran, Russia
Edi Rama and the Russian Embassy Building in Tirana

After clashing with an Iranian official a few days ago, Prime Minister Edi Rama appears to have opened another war front, this time with Russia, following accusations that the two countries are hiding behind anti-government protests.

Since the protests began, Rama has tried to sell the protests as the product of malicious funding from unfriendly countries. Different statements about different funders are made every day by the prime minister, ministers, and majority MPs.

Yesterday, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhaj and the head of the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group, Taulant Balla, declared that the protests against the government, in addition to Iran and neighboring countries, are also being financed by Russia.

Regarding these statements, the Russian Embassy in Tirana has reacted, denying the Kremlin's involvement in these demonstrations, adding that Russia strictly implements the fundamental principle of foreign policy, of non-interference in the internal affairs of foreign states.

It is further stated that this is not the first time that the Albanian government has attempted to create a narrative, according to them, unfounded, about Russia's malicious influence. Finally, the Russian Embassy in Tirana calls for restraint in statements by Albanian politicians.

Comment of the Russian Embassy in Albania regarding anti-Russian statements by Albanian officials on July 2, 2026 The statements of the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports of Albania B. Gonxha and the Deputy of the Parliament of Albania, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party of Albania T. Balla regarding the “Kremlin’s involvement” in the protests taking place in the country arouse surprise. We are also seeing similar allegations in a number of media outlets by certain journalists. These statements are completely unfounded.

Russia strictly implements one of the fundamental principles of its foreign policy: the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of foreign states. Moscow always respects the choice of the people and works with the legitimately elected government. We wish success and prosperity to the Albanian people, regardless of the current political situation and the current level of relations.

"We regret to note that this is not the first time that Albanian politicians have tried to baselessly impose on the domestic public the idea of the so-called "malign influence" of Russia. We call for a more responsible approach to such statements and restraint from looking for enemies where there are none," the statement said.
