A huge fire broke out near the Costa Brava tourist destination in northeastern Spain on Sunday, forcing authorities to impose restrictions on traffic in more than 10 communities along the Catalan coast, one of the most popular areas during the summer season, the Catalan fire service said.
The fire started in the morning hours near the municipality of La Bisbal d'Empordà, near the city of Girona, about 20 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea coast.
Strong winds fanned the flames, while a thick cloud of smoke blanketed the area. As a result, authorities imposed movement restrictions in more than 10 areas, including Platja d'Aro, a popular tourist town on the coast.

"The problem is that the fire does not have a stable behavior," David Borrell, the head of Catalonia's fire service, told reporters.
More than 200 firefighters were involved in the operation to extinguish the flames.
To facilitate the intervention, firefighters asked Barcelona residents, who usually visit the area during the weekend, to postpone their trips. The appeal was published on the social network X.

Due to the worsening situation caused by the winds, the president of the regional government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, requested the support of the army and the Military Emergency Unit (UME), both to extinguish this fire and another smaller fire that has broken out further north.
"This is an active fire that has not yet been brought under control," declared Salvador Illa, calling on residents of the affected areas to respect the authorities' instructions to restrict movement.
