Albania faces heat wave, doctors: Beware of stroke

The heat wave that has swept across Europe is being felt strongly in Albania. In Tirana, high temperatures have made daily life difficult for citizens, who are trying to protect themselves from the sun with water bottles, umbrellas or by seeking shade in every possible corner.

However, not everyone can avoid the hottest hours of the day. Construction workers continue to work on construction sites, while street cleaners, traffic police officers, and kiosk workers face scorching temperatures every day.

Among them is 33-year-old Filipino Ladymay Dela Penap, who works even during peak heat hours.

"Is it hot in there? Yes, it is very hot. But I'm used to it, to be honest. Even with these temperatures," says Ladymay Dela Penap.

Doctors warn that extreme temperatures pose an increased risk to young children, the elderly over 65, and people with chronic illnesses. According to them, prolonged exposure to the sun can cause serious complications.

"The most extreme cases include strokes, especially in young children and people over 65. Recently, we are seeing these problems in other ages, affected by stress and chronic diseases, which are aggravated by high temperatures," says Leonard Hasanaj, family doctor at Polyclinic No. 10.

The doctor also advises caution when using air conditioning, to avoid sudden temperature changes.

"The temperature is not recommended to be set below 23 degrees Celsius, to avoid strong contrast with the temperature outside," he adds to "Report TV".

To reduce the risk of high temperatures, specialists recommend avoiding sun exposure during peak hours, consuming sufficient amounts of water, fruits and vegetables, and staying in cool environments whenever possible.
