Our lawmakers, the EU and Marx

Our lawmakers, the EU and Marx

Beyond this technical language, the only thing that seems to be happening is that most of our legislators are completely unfamiliar with the process, and this is evident not only from their pathetic words and discussions, but more than anything else from ignorance.

It is a fact that Albania is likely to join the EU by 2030. Convinced of this reality, our prime minister included it in the election slogan, personalizing it with his name: "Albania 2030 in the EU, only with Edin and the Socialist Party"! But, he has a justification from the European conjuncture. "Albania has been a candidate for membership since 2014, the time when he came to power until he wants to stay on his own, according to him. Since then, the head of the Albanian government, Rama, has made it the topic of his domestic and foreign politics and rhetoric. He does not understand anything, not even from his movements, because in the morning he is in a local city, in the afternoon abroad and in the evening, somewhere again in Albania!! Meanwhile, the opposition with a constant critical sense reminds him that the alleged reforms have no connection at all with the daily life of Albanians. The various economic indications and especially the fall of the country, prove him right.

In this EU context, the rhetoric varies between politics. The majority, through its emissaries, who are not very transparent about integration, are asking the EU for step-by-step involvement in programs and policy development; while the opposition sees it almost as a rhetorical trap to divert attention from Albania's daily life. On Thursday, the Assembly included in the agenda the voting of a parliamentary resolution supporting the process, voted by consensus with 114 votes from

Majority and Opposition. Moreover, before this, the opposition criticized him for being more technical, while the entire process has become political and related to democratic values and standards.

We are bringing this argument because before the debate, a report was presented by the government (clearly compiled by hardworking bureaucrats who deserve credit for the hard work on the ground), which provided a technical overview of the negotiations for each chapter in turn and the measures taken so far to meet the criteria and the numerous gaps identified by Brussels.

Away from this technical language, the only thing that seems is that most of our legislators do not know the process at all and this is not only evident from their pathetic words and discussions, but more than anything else from ignorance. Rightly, the veteran DP MP, Jozefina Topalli, former Speaker of the Assembly, expressed this public concern a while ago for the SP MPs, but the same concern is also raised by the few SP people (for the opponents) who already feel the dimensions of this legislature. But is this the level of the people who make our laws!? This is the question that is constantly asked, even though the answer is known. Although this time makes this composition seem normal. The year 2008 has crushed the quality of the parliament and not only.

Meanwhile, the majority does not want or, more precisely, perhaps pretends not to understand that beyond orders, transparency is needed and above all, the public and politics itself must be emancipated to understand and speak with the technicalities and rhetoric of the EU. Unfortunately, this does not happen for a number of reasons, while the media leaves room for explanation for individuals who not only do not understand it in essence, but do not even know the basic structures and the very functioning of the EU. It does not take much effort to observe this as a consequence in our parliament, along with the cynical pleasures that play in the smiles of Rama-Berisha for their detachments. Even though today the parliament is criticized and often anathemaed in our country and not without reason, it is the superior institution that remains in the spotlight and is followed carefully. Even though the way it was received and how it developed as a structure, both in the East and in the West, often disappoints.

There was once a philosopher who foresaw that the democratic institution would collapse everywhere in Europe. His theoretical thought continues to be part of debates and references of thought. In his essay “The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte” (the date refers to November 9, 1799 in the French Republican Calendar), Karl Marx would express bitterly: “Parliamentary cretinism: that particular disease that has spread throughout the Continent since 1848, which keeps those infected by it locked in an imaginary world and robs them of every feeling, every memory, every understanding of the brute external world”. And yet, Albania will probably be in the EU in 2030, it managed to close ten chapters this year (2026), thanks to these legislators, despite Marx’s observation, whose misreading almost led Albania into the mire!!
