For the first time since April, the Israeli military reports a direct attack from Iran after the bombing of the southern suburbs of Beirut.
The Israeli military announced Sunday evening that it had detected ballistic missiles launched from Iran towards Israel, in what appears to be the first direct Iranian attack since early April.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) raised alarms in northern areas of the country and urged residents to stay indoors. According to the military, two missiles coming from Iran were intercepted by air defense systems.
A little later, the IDF warned of "more waves of rockets" fired towards Israeli territory, signaling the possibility of further escalation of the situation.
According to CNN, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called an emergency meeting of the security cabinet to assess developments and coordinate Israel's response.
The escalation comes just hours after Israel carried out an attack on the southern suburbs of Beirut, an area considered a Hezbollah stronghold. The attack was presented by Israeli authorities as a response to Hezbollah strikes against northern Israel.
Last week, Iran publicly warned that it would take direct action against Israel if the latter struck Beirut.
Iranian MP Ebrahim Rezaei declared on the X network that the Israeli attack on the Dahiyeh neighborhood of Beirut would receive a "decisive and painful response."
Moments before the Iranian missile alert, the Israeli military had warned that there was a risk of attacks on Israel "in the coming hours."
Recent developments increase fears of a direct clash between Israel and Iran, as the conflict on the Israeli-Lebanese border continues to expand and involve more and more regional actors.
