US President Donald Trump said Iran has agreed not to acquire nuclear weapons, offering new insight into ongoing negotiations between the US and Iran.
In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," taped Friday and aired Sunday morning, Trump said discussions with Iran focused on closing what he described as a loophole in the proposed language governing the country's nuclear program.
"They have accepted the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons. We had a clause in there that we would not develop nuclear weapons. And everyone was very happy with it except me. And I said, 'Well, what if they don't develop them, but they go out and buy them, buy them? I want to include the word, if they buy, or buy, or buy. You know, you have to have that in there too because that is not development. So they have no right to develop or buy, acquire or buy,'" Trump said.
Trump's comments provide more information on the specific language being discussed in negotiations with Iran, but the concession Trump highlighted is not new to previous nuclear deals the US has had with Iran in the past.
The opening paragraph of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the international nuclear agreement negotiated under the Obama administration, states that Iran reaffirms that under no circumstances will Iran ever seek, develop, or acquire nuclear weapons.
