US President Donald Trump has stated that he continues to have a close relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, despite some disagreements regarding recent developments in the Middle East.
In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," Trump said he and Netanyahu remain on the same page on key issues, calling the Israeli leader a close friend.
"We get along very well. We've been great friends," Trump said, referring to the cooperation between the two countries in operations against Iran.
However, the US president acknowledged that he has differences with Netanyahu over the way Israel is conducting military operations in Lebanon. According to him, he would prefer more focused action against Hezbollah, avoiding a wider escalation of the conflict.
Trump also added that the US could help in this regard or rely on the new Syrian government, for which he expressed positive assessments.
The statements come at a time when clashes between the Israeli army and Hezbollah have intensified in southern Lebanon, despite a US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon.
Just a few days ago, Trump expressed his concern about Israel's military plans in Lebanon, as Washington continues efforts to reach a peace deal with Iran.
Donald Trump also stated that the US will not release frozen Iranian assets nor ease sanctions on Tehran before a peace deal is reached.
The US president stressed that any decision to unblock funds or lift punitive measures will only be made after an agreement is finalized.
"If they behave well, if they do a good job, we start talking," Trump said.
He also added that his administration is not seeking Lebanon's inclusion in a short-term agreement between the US and Iran, suggesting that the focus remains on direct negotiations with Tehran.
