The strongest tremor reached a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale. Material damage was recorded in Prokopi and Dafnusa, while seismologists estimate that the phenomenon is related to the known seismic activity of the area…

A series of strong earthquakes, felt across much of central Greece, struck Northern Evian on Sunday afternoon.

The first tremor was recorded at 12:58 with a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale. Two minutes later, at 1:00 p.m., another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 followed, while at 1:02 p.m. the strongest tremor was recorded, with a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale.

The epicenter of the earthquakes was near the village of Prokopi, where authorities recorded significant damage to many buildings. A similar situation was reported in the neighboring village of Dafnusa, where an old house collapsed.

According to the head of the local community, several landslides have caused problems in the road network of the village and surrounding areas. He recalled that the same area was hit by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in May 2025, while on March 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 on the Richter scale was recorded.

In the town of Limni in Evia, local authorities intervened to evacuate several elderly women from a damaged apartment. According to official information, they are in good health and have been transferred to a safe place.

At least 10 aftershocks

Following the main 5.2-magnitude earthquake, seismographs have recorded at least 10 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 2.4 to 3.3 on the Richter scale.

The tremors were also felt in the Attica region, while there were reports of tremors in a wide area around Evia, including the Sporades, Volos, Laminas and Livadia.

What seismologists say

Kostas Papazachos, professor of seismology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, told ERT that this is a series of seismic tremors in a region with many active tectonic faults. According to him, the recorded activity is consistent with the known seismic characteristics of the area and does not represent a cause for concern.

Seismologist Athanasios Ganas stressed that the 5.2-magnitude earthquake is considered to be within the range of a strong tremor, but it is still too early to determine whether it constitutes the main earthquake of this seismic sequence. He added that the tectonic fault responsible for the activity is well-known and does not have the potential to generate very large earthquakes.

The president of the Greek Organization for Earthquake Planning and Protection (OASP), Efthimios Lekkas, also told ERT that in this area earthquakes usually occur in groups within a few hours or days, but with relatively low magnitudes. According to him, the characteristics of local faults do not favor the development of high-magnitude earthquakes.
