Washington is analyzing the possibility of a direct agreement to secure control over the strategic base of Diego Garcia.
The White House is considering a plan to buy the Chagos Islands from Mauritius, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported today.
According to the article, American officials have prepared a proposal that would allow the United States to bypass Great Britain and negotiate directly with Mauritius to take control of Diego Garcia, the island home to a strategically important US-British military base in the Indian Ocean.
Reuters notes that it has not been able to independently verify this report. So far, neither the White House nor the British Foreign Office have commented publicly on the news.
According to The Telegraph, this scenario is one of the options the US administration is considering in case British Prime Minister Keir Starmer decides to transfer sovereignty over the Chagos archipelago to Mauritius.
The report adds that the White House and Downing Street are in talks to secure the future of the Diego Garcia base, which is considered a key asset to the military and strategic interests of the US and the UK.
In April, the British government suspended the agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, following criticism from US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, in February, Trump had called the deal a "big mistake," expressing concerns about the potential consequences for Western security and strategic interests in the region.
The Chagos Islands are located in the Indian Ocean and have been the subject of a decades-long dispute between Britain and Mauritius over their sovereignty. Diego Garcia, the archipelago's most important island, is home to one of the most important US military bases outside American territory.
