Protester Niko Qarkaj

Niko Qarkaj, one of the protesters arrested after the protest held on July 2 in front of the Parliament, was released today by decision of the Tirana Court, which decided to release him due to lack of evidence.

After leaving the premises of Police Station No. 3, where he was greeted with applause and cheers from dozens of supporters, the young man made a symbolic gesture that attracted the attention of those present. He climbed onto the railing of the police station entrance, took an egg out of his pocket and, before throwing it towards the institution's courtyard, declared: "This was my weapon."

Qarkaj was arrested after the protest in front of Parliament, along with several other protesters, who were accused of disturbing the public peace, destroying property, and resisting or using violence against State Police officers. After reviewing the case, the court decided to release him, assessing that there was insufficient evidence to justify the continuation of the security measure.

During his stay at the police station and in the court session, Qarkaj's name was also mentioned due to his health condition. According to supporters and family members, he was raped during his detention by police officers and suffered several epileptic seizures. Such an episode was also recorded during the session at the Tirana Court, causing the process to be temporarily interrupted to provide him with the necessary medical assistance. These claims have not been officially confirmed by the authorities.

Qarkaj's release comes within the framework of the Tirana Court's decisions regarding the protesters arrested after the July 2 rally. Most of them were given lighter security measures, while some were released without any security measures.
