Fuel prices in Albania may increase further. This is not due to developments in the Middle East that have made oil more expensive on the stock exchanges, but to the government itself. Two more fees will be added to the dozen taxes that are levied on each liter of diesel and gasoline... tracking and national security reserves.

" We are currently evaluating the entire process and are in the state-owned company ALBTrace Co. Once we have defined the entire work program, we will also be able to know what the eventual costs will be. However, in any case, the benefits for Albanian citizens will outweigh the costs ," said Minister Petrit Malaj.

With the Transparency Board already in place and fuel prices heading towards record levels, the government has no intention of intervening in any way other than the excise tax. The latter will be reduced by 20 percent only when oil exceeds the level of 220 lek.

" The mechanism will be such that at the moment that the Transparency Board determines that the retail price will be 221 lek, automatically at that moment the decision is made that the selling price will be 221 lek minus the 20% excise tax reduction, which corresponds to approximately 8 lek, so it will be 213 lek ," said Minister Malaj.

Despite the fact that rising fuel prices are creating a chain reaction in food prices, hitting consumers, the government still does not have any aid package for citizens at the moment.

" The situation is under constant monitoring by the government. We are coordinating with all line ministries to see what the next developments will be like. Malaj assured that if there is a need for intervention by the government to introduce aid packages, especially for the needy, without a doubt we will take all necessary measures, " stressed Minister Malaj.

Minister of Finance Petrit Malaj announced that the new reference prices will be ready within April for the other 60 municipalities. For Tirana, those of 2023 remain in force./ A2CNN
