"Medical sectors will pass through the tax sieve", Malaj: Excise duty

If the price of oil exceeds the limit of 220 lek per liter, the excise duty will be reduced by 20%. This was stated by the Minister of Finance, Petrit Malaj, during a press conference. Speaking about the price of fuel, Malaj stated that the reduction of the excise duty by 8 lek will be made by the Transparency Board.

" The mechanism comes into operation at the moment the board determines that the retail price will be 221 lekë. At that moment, the decision is made that the selling price will be 221 lekë minus the 20% excise tax reduction, so it will be 213 lekë. This will be done on a daily basis, when the price exceeds 220 lekë, we will have a reduction in the retail price by 8 lekë. When the price is below 220 lekë, it will be the price that the Board has determined ," said Malaj.

During the press conference, the Minister of Finance stated that 130 billion lek were collected for the January-February period, or 11.5% more than the same period a year ago, while emphasizing that this positive performance is expected to continue in the coming months.

" Revenues have reached historic levels as a result of structural reforms and good governance, but also due to the awareness of citizens and businesses."

Total income in two months, 130 billion lekë. If we compare with the period January-February 2025, the growth is 11.5% more. The trend will continue to be positive, the Albanian economy is performing well, but on the other hand we have greater formalism in sectors in the Albanian market , "said Malaj.

At the same time, the tax administration has increased controls on tax evasion. During 2025, 168 investigations for tax fraud were conducted, 20% more than the previous year, while over 62 million euros of undeclared income were identified.

" For 2025, we have 168 investigations against tax fraud, an increase of about 20% compared to 2024. We have investigated 200 individuals assessed as at risk by the Tax Administration. 100 wealthy individuals and 101 individuals were audited using data from third parties, where 62.8 million euros related to the failure to declare personal income were identified ," Malaj emphasized.

After tourism, construction, and the hydrocarbon market, Malaj announced that controls will be launched for the formalization of the medical and personal care and aesthetic sectors, which are considered at high risk for evasion.

" The next step will be the control of the medical sector and the personal and aesthetic care sector. Sectors that we have identified as high risk and will be the subject of the tax administration's work in the coming months ," said Malaj.
