With Donald Trump declaring Venezuela's airspace "totally closed," another flashpoint is heating up in the Western Hemisphere, and it risks turning into a new military conflict with global consequences.
The official justification is the “war on drug trafficking,” but the language used, the unilateral decisions, and the deployment of military power on the doorstep of a sovereign state speak not of humanitarian aid but of brutal pressure. The US is behaving like an empire seeking to impose its rule on an area that has historically resisted total control. And this is not the first time that an ideological confrontation has been disguised as an anti-drug operation.
In the background lies Trump's own political future: a president on the campaign trail, seeking to give himself the profile of an iron commander. In the absence of domestic victories, external conflict becomes a weapon of propaganda. And again, it is other peoples who will suffer the consequences.
Venezuela is not a model democracy, but intervening with air ultimatums and the presence of aircraft carriers near its shores is an act that resembles pure aggression more than preventive diplomacy. This precedent is dangerous: today it is Caracas, tomorrow it could be another capital challenging hegemony.
There is no peace on the horizon. But another war. And with it, another energy crisis, another wave of refugees, another division in the international arena.
