With his strike on Venezuela earlier this year, Donald Trump put a lid on any remaining illusions among those who still believed in the return of the old international order. He did not act to save democracy, nor to defend any international norms. He acted because he could. And with that, he ushered in a new era of American foreign policy: one that was cold, transactional, and devoid of moral justifications.
In the same vein, his administration has put on the table an idea that speaks louder than any statement: the creation of a new geopolitical grouping; called the C5, which would include the US, Japan and three of the pillars of the BRICS: China, India and Russia. This grouping is not just a hypothetical structure. It is a brutal message: Europe no longer has a place in the big conversations about world governance.
The C5 grouping is not just a diplomatic provocation or an experimental idea for the media. It is a reflection of a new world, where great powers align not on the basis of shared values, but on strategic weight and long-term interest. The exclusion of European countries from this scheme is not accidental, it is a silent statement that Europe is no longer perceived as a necessary player in the new architecture of global power. And this is not because Europe lacks potential, but because it lacks courage.
After more than 70 years at the center of the international system, the European continent is being silently excluded. Not because it lacks wealth or potential, but because it has lost the ability to act. With a divided and sluggish EU, with indecisive leaders and a dramatic lack of strategic vision, Europe has become a spectator to the new order.
Meanwhile, the BRICS+ grouping is expanding and articulating itself more and more every day as an alternative to the Western structure. From Africa to Asia, large and small countries are positioning themselves on a new geopolitical map, where the stakes are no longer set by the old European chancelleries, but by powers with real economic growth and global strategic influence.
Trump, for all his insufferable rhetoric about the classic establishment, is doing exactly what Europe has forgotten to do: he is rewriting international relations according to the new rules. He makes no secret of the fact that he will negotiate directly with China, India, or Russia, and he no longer has patience for European “advice.”
Amidst all this, the EU continues to deal with internal bureaucratic processes, technical reforms and cautious statements that no one takes seriously. The lack of ambition and the fear of projecting power have caused the continent to lose its real weight. Europe is no longer a factor, because it does not behave as such.
In this new world, built on cold interests and clear axes of influence, there is no room for illusions. Whoever does not sit at the table as a power, will serve as a listener. And listeners, in international politics, have no weight./ Pamphlet
