From political romance to European indifference: when interest ends, smiles fade...
Once upon a time, smiles were wide, words were warm, and political gestures were full of symbolism. Today, only protocol remains. The relationship between Edi Rama and Giorgia Meloni seems to have gone from an exaggerated diplomatic romance to a cold institutional coexistence. And like any such story, no one accepts the separation, but everyone feels it.
The Rama-Meloni “love” was not ideological. It was practical, opportunistic and very media-friendly. It was born out of necessity: Meloni sought a strong solution to immigration, Rama sought an international role and weight. They were quickly found. They were politically embraced even more quickly. But relationships built on necessity rarely survive.
Today, Meloni is no longer the “outsider” leader who challenged Brussels. She is behaving like the prime minister of a founding country of the EU, cautious, disciplined, integrated into the official European line. There is no longer room for gray experiments, legally dubious agreements or personal alliances that produce headlines, but also trouble. Albania, in this context, is no longer a political asset, it is a silent dossier.
In this Europe where Meloni is trying to enter quietly, Rama is a problem, not a partner. Too theatrical, too personal, too unpredictable. A leader who talks about global peace, while leading a candidate country; who appears on boards and forums, but uses diplomacy as a personal stage. For Brussels, he is tolerable folklore. For Rome, he is a narrative risk.
And here the distance begins. Not because Italy no longer needs Albania. But because Meloni no longer needs Rama. She has chosen the alignment. He has chosen the spotlight. She is closing the brackets. He is opening the parentheses.
The irony is that Rama still acts as if nothing happened. As if the relationship continues. As if the Italian silence is simply a “pause.” In reality, it is that classic diplomatic phase when one side has already left, while the other is still posting memories.
In politics, love doesn't die with noise. It dies with indifference. And today, Rome is indifferent./ Pamphlet
