Three people died on Monday morning in a fire that engulfed a block of flats in a residential building in the suburbs of Lyon. French authorities are investigating whether the incident was intentional.
According to French media, one of the victims allegedly fell from the seventh floor while trying to escape the flames.
The Lyon prosecutor's office said 14 people were treated in hospital for minor injuries and breathing problems. Meanwhile, around 50 residents were evacuated from the building and temporarily sheltered in a municipal gym.
Over 80 firefighters and about 30 fire engines were involved in the firefighting operation.
Investigators are investigating whether the incident is related to conflicts between drug trafficking gangs. The area where the fire occurred has recently been the scene of several violent episodes, including arson and shootings.
On April 24, a woman was wounded in the leg by a stray bullet while returning home with her two children, after gunmen fired at several vehicles parked in the neighborhood.
