A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife on their wedding day. The couple got into an argument during the ceremony, which led to a shooting that killed Nazila Duenas Nascimento, 34. Police have arrested her husband, 55-year-old Daniel Barboza Marinho. The crime took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
According to police, Marinho shot Nazila and left the wedding party that was taking place in Campinas, São Paulo, before returning and opening fire on her.
The groom was arrested shortly afterwards and is being held on suspicion of murder. Police discovered that Nazila had three children from a previous relationship. According to police, a heated argument broke out between them at the party.
Marinho, who works as a municipal police officer, reportedly got into a fight with his wife. Horrified relatives managed to get the children away from the scene before the situation escalated. The 55-year-old allegedly pulled out his service weapon and shot Nazila before fleeing.
Eyewitnesses told local authorities that a short time later he returned and shot his newlywed wife again. Rescue teams immediately went to the scene, while doctors are fighting to keep her alive.
Despite their efforts, the woman died from her injuries. Marinho serves as a municipal guard, or police officer who patrols public spaces.
According to local media, he had worked in the Cabinda Municipal Guard since 1998. Police said the groom contacted authorities himself after the shooting.
In a statement, the local Municipal Guard said it expresses its deep sadness over the incident and reaffirms its commitment to combating all forms of violence.
Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances in which the bloody incident occurred.
