US President Donald Trump has announced that Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay an official visit to the United States towards the end of this year.
Trump clarified that the visit of his Chinese counterpart will include a stop at the White House. The announcement came after a long conversation between the two presidents, where topics such as trade, Taiwan, Russia's war in Ukraine and the situation in Iran were discussed.
According to current plans, Trump is expected to travel to China in April, before Xi visits the U.S. This exchange of visits comes at a time of tense but functional relations between the world's two largest economies.
Since Trump returned to the White House a year ago, the US administration has imposed new tariffs on various sectors, including steel and the auto industry, as part of a broader economic and political strategy.
The United States and China have clashed several times over trade issues, but reached a truce after a sharp escalation last spring. In parallel, Washington has taken steps to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing.
Despite efforts at economic reorientation and trade disputes, economic ties between the US and China remain deep and interconnected.
