New York froze under extreme temperatures, the cold was more severe than in

New York is bracing for an extreme cold snap, with temperatures in some areas dropping below those recorded in parts of Antarctica. The phenomenon has engulfed much of the northeastern United States and has been described by meteorological authorities as one of the most severe episodes in recent years.

On Sunday, temperatures in New York City ranged from about -16 to -26 degrees Celsius, with the National Weather Service warning of extremely dangerous conditions. In some areas, this represents the longest period of extremely low temperatures in more than a decade, according to the agency.

Meteorological data shows that the extreme cold also spread to other parts of the region, where in areas of the northeastern US temperatures approached -40 degrees Celsius. Warnings for maximum caution affected more than 43 million residents, including major metropolitan areas such as New York and Philadelphia.

The situation was exacerbated by strong winds and heavy snowfall, caused by an atmospheric system that created bands of precipitation with rapid accumulations. In upstate New York and the northern New England region, temperatures reached -29 to -34 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists warned that in these conditions, exposure to cold can cause frostbite in less than 30 minutes. Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that in recent weeks at least 17 people have died in New York City as a result of exposure to extreme weather, of which 13 cases were directly determined to be deaths from hypothermia.
