The German government and intelligence services are in an internal clash over how to manage and communicate the risk of possible attacks in Germany, linked to tensions between the United States, Israel and Iran.

This is what the New York Times writes, referring to German intelligence sources, former security officials and parliamentarians, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

According to the report, Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt have publicly presented the risk of attacks in Germany as hypothetical and not immediate. However, various representatives of security structures, especially at the regional level, consider the threat more concrete and urgent.

The New York Times writes that these differences have created tensions between federal authorities and regional intelligence offices, which are considered closer to potentially sensitive targets and more exposed to risk.

Some security officials say that overly cautious government communication could lead to the public underestimating the threat. On the other hand, federal government officials fear that stronger warnings could create panic or act as a “self-fulfilling prophecy.”

On March 12, Chancellor Merz announced the strengthening of security measures for Israeli, Jewish and American facilities in Germany, but stated that there were no concrete elements indicating a direct increase in the threat level on German territory.

However, according to the New York Times, representatives of the security apparatus have unofficially argued that the conflict in the Middle East has significantly increased the risk of terrorist attacks in Germany and other European countries.

The American newspaper also points out that German domestic intelligence has recently attributed almost a dozen attacks in Europe to the pro-Iranian Shiite network "Harakat Ashab al Yamin al Islamiya".

The group is also suspected of having taken responsibility for the deliberate arson of an Israeli restaurant in Munich.

A spokesman for the German Interior Ministry told the New York Times that signals of possible Iranian plans in Germany "have increased."

Meanwhile, Chancellor Merz's spokesman, Stefan Kornelius, dismissed claims of disagreement between the government and intelligence, stating that there is "complete unity" in identifying and confronting security risks.
