A US fighter jet has shot down two empty Iranian-flagged oil tankers heading for ports in Iran, the US military said today. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), an F/A-18 Super Hornet struck the smokestacks of the two ships with precision munitions, disabling them before they could reach an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman.
"Through this action, a violation of the ongoing US blockade was prevented ," said the statement published by CENTCOM on the X platform.
On the other hand, the Iranian Fars news agency reports sporadic clashes between US ships and Iranian armed forces in the Strait of Hormuz, since 13:00 today. Tehran has not yet given a detailed official reaction to the attack on the tankers.
We recall that the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical area for global oil trade and any incident there risks further increasing instability in the region.
