US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated from Rome that the United States expects a response from Iran today regarding negotiations to end the war.
"I hope it's a serious offer," Rubio said.
He also commented on reports that Iran is attempting to create a new agency to control maritime traffic and impose taxes in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that such an action would be "unacceptable" for the US, if the information proves true.
Rubio also clarified that he has not discussed with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a withdrawal of US troops from Italy.
The statement comes after the US announced the decision to withdraw 5,000 military troops from Germany, while President Donald Trump has warned of the possibility of withdrawing more forces from Italy and Spain, due to these countries' stance on war with Iran.
The US Secretary of State said he remains a "strong supporter of NATO", but criticized several European countries, including Spain, saying they have not allowed the US to use military bases for important operations.
According to him, this created unnecessary risks for the US while preparing the offensive against Iran.
