The US Department of Defense on Friday released 162 files, documents, testimonies and videos related to UFO sightings and unidentified aerial phenomena, some of which date back nearly 80 years.
The publication follows an executive order by President Donald Trump in February, which called for greater transparency regarding "extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) and unidentified flying objects (UFOs)."
The announcement was accompanied by statements from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, FBI Director Kash Patel and NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. The officials praised Trump's decision to release the documents, calling it a step toward greater transparency.
Even before the presidential order, the Pentagon had been engaged for years in a process of declassifying and releasing government materials related to UFOs, which federal authorities often describe as unexplained anomalous phenomena, or UAPs.
Sean Kirkpatrick, a physicist and former US intelligence official who headed the All-Area Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) until 2023, said he does not expect any shocking revelations from the released files.
"People shouldn't expect documentary footage or interviews with aliens," he told the Associated Press. "It just doesn't exist."
According to Kirkpatrick, many of the videos that purport to show extraterrestrial technology have mundane explanations. He said infrared cameras used by the US military often record aircraft engines or other hot objects, creating visual effects that are misinterpreted.
The AARO's first report for 2024 identified hundreds of new UAP cases, but found no evidence that the US government has ever confirmed the existence of extraterrestrial technology. A second report on the most recent cases is expected to be released soon.
A White House spokesman stated that the original videos, photographs, and documents on the UAP are now collected on a single public platform.
"Under the Trump administration, the American public can have full access to the information and form their own judgment about the contents of these files," the spokesperson said.
The order to release the UFO files comes after Trump had previously ordered the declassification of documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., during the first week of his second term in January 2025.
