Brown University professor questions the role of Zionism and warns of consequences in Israel and beyond...

Zionism has transformed into a state ideology that, according to historian Omer Bartov, has taken on a racist and violent character.

The statement was made in an interview with Haaretz, where the professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University criticized the historical and political development of this ideology.

" Zionism has become the ideology of the state. It has become not only militaristic and expansionist, but also racist, extremely violent, ultimately an ideology that deeply harms the individual and society. Such an ideology has no place ," said Bartov.

He described it as "ironic and tragic" that a movement born to protect Jews from persecution and to offer them security has ended, according to him, in a racist and violent form.

Bartov argues that it was clear as early as 1948 that, without a constitution guaranteeing the rights of all, Israel risked not becoming a “normal” state for its citizens. He recalls efforts for change, particularly the Oslo process in the early 1990s, which, he says, was violently interrupted.

" The attempt was blocked very aggressively, with Netanyahu's encouragement, through the assassination of Rabin. It's not talked about enough that Rabin's blood is on Netanyahu's hands ," he said.

According to Bartov, Israel cannot function as a “normal” state under this ideology. “ Zionism must disappear. The state will remain. The question is what kind of state it will be. It must change radically. Under the Zionist ideology, it cannot ,” he stressed.

He added that the Holocaust has been used as the main justification for Israel's existence and policies, transforming over time into an element that holds Israeli society together and is interpreted as a constant threat.

" After October 7, these two things have merged. The Hamas attack has been presented as something similar to the Holocaust: Hamas are Nazis. Criticism of Israel's actions is anti-Semitism ," he said.

Bartov believes that if Zionism has led to genocide in Gaza, then it can no longer be considered a valid ideology. “ Genocide has no justification […] it is not a legal, moral or political argument ,” he said.

He added that, in his opinion, Israel risks becoming an "isolated state," not because of anti-Semitism, but as a result of its actions.

Regarding Hamas, Bartov stressed that resistance to the occupation is legitimate, but underlined that this does not justify massacres. “ The right to resist does not give the right to commit massacres […] nor does the right to self-defense justify this ,” he declared.

According to him, the goal of Israeli operations in Gaza has changed over time, targeting not only Hamas, but also creating conditions that make the territory uninhabitable.

Bartov also warned of a growing rift between Israel and Jewish communities around the world, especially in the US, due to these developments.

He also criticized the way the term anti-Semitism is used in international debates, arguing that any criticism of Israel is often identified with this phenomenon, which, according to him, harms the public debate itself. / Pamphlet
