Pope Leo XIV stated that he is open to criticism, while continuing to call for peace in the context of tensions around Iran.
Speaking to reporters as he left Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, where the papal summer residence is located, he emphasized the Church's mission in this period.
" The mission of the Church is to preach the Gospel and peace ," the Pope said.
He also reacted to recent criticism, adding: " If someone wants to criticize me for proclaiming the Gospel, let them do so with the truth. The Church has spoken out against all nuclear weapons for years, so there is no doubt. I simply hope to be heard because of the value of the word of God ."
His statements come after US President Donald Trump criticized the Pope the day before, claiming without providing evidence that he "thinks it's okay for Iran to have nuclear weapons."
The Pope did not directly respond to these accusations, but reiterated the Church's position against nuclear weapons and the importance of dialogue for peace.
