JD Vance confirms the electronic signing of the memorandum of understanding, while full details of the agreement are expected to be published within 48 hours.
The United States and Iran have taken another step toward implementing the agreement reached to end the conflict, by digitally signing the memorandum of understanding that was agreed upon over the weekend.
The news was confirmed by US Vice President JD Vance, who in an interview with ABC stated that the document has been electronically signed by both parties, pending the official ceremony to be held on Friday in Switzerland.
According to Reuters, citing a senior US official, the memorandum was digitally signed by President Donald Trump, Vice President Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. The same information was also published by Axios.
American sources say that the agreement provides for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the end of the American naval blockade of Iran, while other issues, such as the unblocking of Iranian funds and the easing of sanctions, will be addressed in the next stages of implementation.
However, the official text of the memorandum has not yet been published. CNN reported that Washington and Tehran have so far given not entirely identical interpretations of the steps that will follow after the signing ceremony, suggesting that some elements of the agreement remain to be clarified.
Meanwhile, The New York Times, citing three Iranian officials, reported that Tehran delayed finalizing the document until after midnight on Sunday to avoid the announcement coinciding with President Trump's birthday.
From Lebanon, the Shiite movement Hezbollah welcomed the development, calling the memorandum a "great achievement" for Iran and stating that the agreement has contributed to establishing a ceasefire on all fronts, including Lebanese territory.
Full details of the memorandum are expected to be made public within 24 to 48 hours, while technical negotiations for the implementation of the agreement are expected to begin this week.
