Two years before he entered the inner circle of US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, General Christopher Laniv was a division commander known for his strict enforcement of rules, banning cell phones during physical training and insisting that soldiers use only standard military equipment.
Laniv, known for his iron discipline, was not liked by the rank and file of the 82nd Airborne Division, and many of them booed him during "All-American Week" activities in the final year of his command, according to current and former members of the unit.
However, his emphasis on discipline, as well as a chance meeting later with President Trump, propelled him to the top of the military hierarchy, and he is expected to take the top job in charge of training and equipping the US Army this week. US officials told the Wall Street Journal that Trump could still change his mind.
“What he did, and what I appreciated, was he brought the 82nd, which had strayed somewhat, back to traditional training and traditional values,” said retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, former commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. He had nominated Laniv for a senior Pentagon post before Trump’s second term and had advised Hegseth.
Laniv, who colleagues describe as ambitious but modest, could face tough questions from lawmakers who will have to confirm his nomination to the Army's top job. Some Republicans have privately expressed doubts about whether he is the right man for the job, according to people familiar with the internal discussions.
He has less experience than most of his predecessors. Laniv has held the rank of four-star general for only three months, since February 6, when he was confirmed as deputy chief of the army. Most previous leaders had served at least 18 months at the four-star rank before taking the top job.
Lawmakers are also expected to use the confirmation process to raise concerns over other issues, including Hegseth's decision to fire the last Army Chief of Staff, General Randy George, as well as reductions in US troops in Europe.

“Welcome back, Mr. President,” Laniv said, reading from a pre-approved script, according to U.S. Army officials. “Is this guy like he just stepped out of a casting call or not?” Trump asked the audience in the room.
According to Kellogg, Laniv was already a candidate to take over as Hegseth's top military aide. He said he had recommended that the new Defense Secretary interview Laniv before the swearing-in ceremony.
During the interview, Hegseth was impressed by Laniv's career and the alignment of his views with the Pentagon's plans for the military, according to current and former officials.
The strong performance in the interview and the fact that Trump had praised his appearance in the video gave Laniv the advantage, the sources said.
Laniv subsequently gained Hegseth's trust thanks to his work ethic, direct approach to problems and ability to offer an experienced military perspective, according to officials.
Since taking over the Pentagon last year, Hegseth has fired or marginalized at least eight senior Army generals.
