Former US first lady Jill Biden has revealed that during the 2024 presidential debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, she thought her husband was having a stroke.
"I was scared, because I had never seen Joe in that condition, before or since. Never," Jill Biden said in an interview with CBS News.
"I don't know what happened. As I was looking at him, I thought, 'Oh my God, he's having a stroke.' I was so scared," she said.
Jill Biden's full interview with journalist Rita Braver, for the "Sunday Morning" show on CBS News, is expected to air on Sunday.
After his poor performance in the debate against Donald Trump, Joe Biden faced great pressure from Democrats, as concerns about his health, age, and mental capacity increased.
At the June 2024 debate, Biden appeared hoarse and at times seemed to lose his train of thought. At the time, his campaign attributed the condition to a temporary health problem.
Although his staff initially insisted that the president would not drop out of the race, mounting pressure within the Democratic Party and other public gaffes led Biden to decide to drop out of running for a second term.
After his withdrawal, the Democratic nomination was entrusted to Vice President Kamala Harris, who was subsequently defeated by Donald Trump in the presidential election.
According to reports, Jill Biden was considered one of the president's closest and most influential advisors during his term, as well as one of the people who ultimately encouraged him to withdraw from the presidential race.
