US President Donald Trump is facing his lowest popularity rating since the start of joint surveys by The Economist and YouGov in 2009. According to the latest data, 493 days into his current term, Trump's net approval rating has dropped to -24 points.
Only 34% of Americans say they approve of the way he is doing his job as president, while 58% disapprove. About 6% of respondents said they are undecided.
The analysis published by "The Economist" estimates that international developments and the economic situation have significantly affected the president's political position. The conflict with Iran has negatively affected the public perception of American foreign policy. The net rating for Trump's foreign policy management has fallen to -20 points.
However, the main concern for most Americans remains the economy. Inflation and prices continue to dominate public debate and are considered the most important national problem by 29% of citizens. According to the survey, this issue worries Democrats and Republicans almost equally.
The data shows that 3 in 4 Americans consider the economic situation to be “poor” or “fair,” while 63% believe the economy is getting worse. These perceptions are directly affecting the president’s declining support.
Trump's net approval rating for his handling of inflation and prices has reached -43 points, the lowest level of his term. The Economist partly attributes this deterioration to the rise in fuel prices since the start of the conflict with Iran. Before the war, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the US was under $3, while it has now reached $4.48.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that "aid is on the way", but the British magazine points out that the administration's contradictory statements on the war have increased public skepticism.
Despite a slump in national polls, Trump continues to maintain a firm grip on the Republican Party. Candidates he supports are winning Republican primaries ahead of the November midterm elections.
