Bad weather sweeps across Greece, with storms, landslides and blocked roads

The intense rainfall of the last few days has caused a series of serious problems in Crete, where entire areas have been affected by landslides and flooding, revealing the severe consequences of the bad weather that is hitting the region. In Ierapetra, in the area of Ferma, the torrential rain turned the road into a torrent and filled all the surrounding areas with mud, causing road blockages and disruption of traffic. The kindergarten and high school in Koutsouras were closed due to the severe conditions and will remain closed tomorrow.

The road connecting Tertsa to Myrtos towards Viannos has been closed after a landslide and rockslide, with local authorities deciding to temporarily close it to ensure the safety of citizens. Meanwhile, a dangerous incident was recorded in Heraklion when a parked car slid into an open construction pit after part of the road collapsed due to the continuous rain. In another area of the city, the rains caused the partial collapse of a building, forcing the authorities to completely block the road.

Municipalities and emergency services are on heightened alert as severe weather is expected to continue through December 5, with heavy rainfall, local hail and strong winds, particularly in the southern part of Crete. Authorities have called for maximum caution and following self-protection instructions.

In Heraklion, measures have also been taken for the homeless, who are being informed by social workers about temporary housing options. Social centers have been made available during the day, while the Emergency Center in Nea Alikarnassos will provide overnight shelter for the homeless affected by the extreme weather.
