Zohran Mamdani won the New York mayoral election on Tuesday, November 4, securing the majority of the votes. After the victory, he wasted no time in sending a powerful message to US President Donald Trump.
Despite a strong campaign against him and President Donald Trump's repeated calls for voters not to support him, Zohran Mamdani has achieved a historic victory in the New York mayoral election.
In his victory speech, Mamdani declared that: "New York was built by immigrants and will remain so now run by an immigrant."
Described as a democratic socialist, Mamdani has faced months of attacks from Trump, who has called him a "communist" and supported his opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo.
During the speech in Brooklyn, Mamdani said: “If there is one city that can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that brought him to life.”
With this victory, Zohran Mamdani becomes the first immigrant mayor in New York's history, marking an important moment for American politics.
Mamdani was elected to the position as a socialist-democrat. He is now the city's first Muslim mayor and the youngest to lead the city since 1917.
His victory came despite a coordinated right-wing and Islamophobic campaign, as well as over $34 million in outside spending against him.
More than that, Mamdani also appears to have ended the career of the state's incumbent politician and former discredited general, Andrew Cuomo.
So who is Mamdan?
He describes himself as "a politician with a Scandinavian soul and darker skin"...
A story of migration, art and activism
Zohran Keame Mamdani was born in Uganda in 1991.
His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is one of Africa's most renowned political scientists, while his mother is the famous Indian director Mira Nair, author of the cult film Monsoon Wedding. The family moved to New York in 1998, when he was only seven years old.
Raised in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, a mosaic of cultures and ethnicities, Mamdani was shaped by diverse realities that led him to a political vision built on social equality and economic justice. Initially passionate about hip-hop, he later chose to become involved in social work, helping low-income families avoid losing their homes due to loans.
"Every day I saw the concrete consequences of inequality," he confessed.
From activist to frontrunner for mayor
Mamdani joined the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017, and just three years later won a seat in the New York State Assembly, representing his district, Astoria.
He was reconfirmed in the 2022 and 2024 elections, gaining ground thanks to a platform that includes ambitious measures such as:
• free public transportation,
• a freeze on rent increases for affordable housing,
• construction of 200,000 new affordable housing units,
• free childcare for all families,
• and a gradual increase in the minimum wage to $30/hour by 2030, financed through taxation of large corporations and millionaires.
These proposals have made him a symbol of a new generation of progressives, but also a target of the wealthy and conservatives. President Donald Trump has called him a "communist" and has warned that he will cut off federal funding after his election.
A figure that divides, but also inspires
Although Mamdani has won the support of left-wing figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, he has sparked heated debate within the party for his critical stances on Israeli policies. He has openly condemned the “genocide against Palestinians in Gaza” and proposed a ban on funding organizations that support illegal Israeli settlements.
Despite the criticism, he has won the sympathy of the younger Jewish generation in the city.
Surprisingly, former President Barack Obama has contacted him personally, offering moral support and advice for the future, which may have strengthened his position among moderate Democrats.
