As the US awaits an Iranian response to its latest proposal to end the conflict that began in late February, President Donald Trump's statements continue to send several distinct messages.
The ideas he repeats include the following key points: the US is in charge; Iran's military is destroyed; and things will be over very soon. Trump also insists that Iran cannot be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz must be restored.
All of this makes it very difficult to know how seriously to take his assurances about the closeness of a deal.
"They want to make a deal. We've had very good talks over the last 24 hours and it's very possible that we'll make a deal," Trump said Wednesday at the White House.
Trump has been making similar remarks for more than a month, claiming when he announced a two-week ceasefire on April 8 that “almost all of the various points of past disagreement have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated.”
The ceasefire has been extended, but there are no signs of further talks on a broad agreement.
