Tensions in Hormuz, Britain sends HMS Dragon to the Middle East

The British warship HMS Dragon will be repositioned from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Middle East, ahead of a possible role in a multinational mission to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

The British Ministry of Defense announced that this decision will enable the ship to contribute immediately if necessary in a defensive operation to guarantee freedom of navigation in this strategic waterway.

According to British authorities, any possible plan will be strictly defensive in nature and will aim to restore confidence in commercial shipping in the area.

In March, the Type 45 destroyer was deployed to protect British air bases in Cyprus, following a drone attack on RAF Akrotiri.

The lack of another Type 45 on standby meant that HMS Dragon departed Portsmouth after only six days. However, less than a month after departure, the ship was forced to stop for maintenance.

The Ministry of Defence stressed that Cyprus remains "well-defended" and that British defence capabilities on the island have been strengthened since January.

Meanwhile, Great Britain and France are leading international efforts to draft a military plan that would enable the escort of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as conditions permit.

In April, military planners from 44 countries gathered in the United Kingdom to discuss possible options for this mission.
