Latvian arrested in Austria for threatening to take hostages on a train

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested after making threats to passengers on a train traveling from Vienna to Innsbruck, police said.

A Latvian man has been arrested in Austria after threatening to take people hostage on a train traveling from Vienna to Innsbruck, police said.

The 31-year-old threatened several train passengers with violence at 1 p.m. Monday and said he would take hostages if police entered the train, authorities said.

The suspect was arrested when the train stopped at Salzburg's main station. He became aggressive and an officer was injured during the arrest, local media reported.

A video shared on X by the news portal NEXTA shows a man being arrested at the station and taken away by several police officers.

The footage could not be independently verified by Euronews.

The suspect was not armed and his motives remain unclear, police said.

The incident came just two days after a man in the UK injured 11 people in a mass stabbing attack on a train.

The 32-year-old suspect has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder.
