An unusual episode has occurred at Cologne/Bonn airport, where two passengers who had missed the last boarding call attempted to catch the plane by breaking through security barriers and running onto the runway. Footage posted on social media shows two men running towards a Wizz Air plane bound for Bucharest, waving their hands to signal the pilot to stop.
According to authorities, the two passengers had pressed the glass emergency button and forced open a security door leading to the runway. In the video, an airport employee is seen rushing to stop them.
Officials said the Airbus had already begun its descent toward the runway when the two men made the dangerous run. They were stopped by staff and turned over to federal police. They have been charged with trespassing and violating the aviation safety law.
The airport announced that aviation safety was never compromised and that flight operations were not affected. The Wizz Air flight was delayed due to the incident, but arrived in Bucharest shortly before schedule.
