Germany has reached an agreement with the United States to purchase and station American Tomahawk missiles on its territory. The news was announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who described it as an important step in strengthening the country's defense.
Speaking in the Bundestag today, after returning from the NATO summit, Merz said that the agreement with Washington aims to close a strategic gap in Germany's defense capabilities.
"On the sidelines of the NATO summit, we agreed with the US government that Tomahawk missiles will be purchased by us and stationed in Germany. With this, we are closing an important strategic gap in our defense. At the same time, we will work on developing our European systems and deploying them in Europe," Merz declared.
The German Chancellor also praised the results of the NATO summit, emphasizing that they "exceeded all expectations," while adding that the alliance has shown that it remains "united, strong and self-confident."
In his speech to MPs, Merz stressed that the government's objective is to make Germany less vulnerable to threats and blackmail, by strengthening its defense capabilities and ensuring the security of its free way of life.
He also mentioned the agreement to sell German company TKMS submarines to Canada, calling it the largest military contract in Germany's modern history.
"NATO is and remains a transatlantic alliance. But we, as Europeans, have realized that we cannot simply delegate our security," Merz said.
