Brazilian star Neymar is seriously considering the possibility of ending his career as a footballer, following Brazil's elimination from the World Cup.
According to Brazilian media reports, the Santos striker will not rush into a decision, but will take a few days to reflect before determining the next steps in his career.
The 34-year-old had a limited role at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, playing less than 45 minutes in total. His inclusion in coach Carlo Ancelotti's squad was accompanied by debate and controversy due to his physical condition.
Following Brazil's defeat to Norway in the round of 16, Neymar announced his immediate retirement from the national team. He is currently in the United States with his family and has not yet announced when he will return to the field.
Sources close to the footballer reveal that he is deeply disappointed by the lack of appreciation for his contribution with the Brazil jersey, as well as by the constant pressure that has accompanied his career over the years.
Neymar remains the all-time leading scorer for the Brazilian national team, with 80 goals, a record he set in 2023, surpassing the legendary Pele. However, despite outstanding performances in several World Cups, he failed to lead the “Selecao” to victory.
At the 2014 World Cup, Neymar was forced to withdraw from the tournament with an injury as Brazil suffered a historic 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals. Four years later, the Selecao were eliminated by Belgium, while at Qatar 2022, his goal against Croatia was not enough to avoid elimination on penalties.
Even in the match against Norway, Neymar scored from the penalty spot, but his goal only served to soften the result. After the match, he was seen in tears, and later said:
" I tried. I tried. It all started here, at MetLife Stadium, and it ended here. Now it's all over ."
