Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is being buried in Mashhad today. He was killed on February 28 in the first barrage of US and Israeli strikes that marked the beginning of the ongoing war.
Citizens have come out in droves to mourn the departure of the supreme leader. Clerics accompanying the coffin have thrown scarves at guards to touch and throw back, desperate to take home a piece of something sacred.
Many of them are carrying Iranian flags, while others are holding pictures and banners threatening Donald Trump's life. These threats are something the US president seems to be very aware of, having said yesterday that he was at the top of Iran's "kill list".
But despite the images of growing crowds and people crying, they do not reflect a country united in support of the regime. Just earlier this year, there were widespread protests and discontent over economic conditions and the government's handling of issues, with Tehran violently suppressing the protests, killing thousands.
And while some of Iran's most senior figures attended today's funeral, there were other notable absences, including the son of Khamenei, the current supreme leader. Some thought this would be the first public appearance of Mojaba Khamenei, who was said to have been seriously injured in the same attack that killed his father. His absence will only fuel further speculation that his condition is worse than reported.
