EU unlocks 16.4 billion euros for Hungary, Magyar's first victory in
Magyar and von der Leyen

The European Union has unblocked 16.4 billion euros to Hungary, which is part of the 18 billion euro package that Brussels had blocked from the Orban government.

It seems that after several years of isolation, Brussels has decided to restore relations with Budapest, while Peter Magyar, who won the elections a few weeks ago, defeating Viktor Orban who remained in power for 16 years, has reached a historic moment for Hungary.

The new prime minister has managed to convince the European Commission to unblock the vast majority of Hungary's frozen funds.

Magyar made little effort to hide his delight as he used the committee's rostrum to harshly attack Orbán's nationalist government, repeating his main domestic messages on dismantling alleged state capture and corruption.

But it seems that the Commission's decision may not have been taken lightly, and the new Hungarian administration will have to live up to its commitments. It is also clear that there are still some areas where the two sides disagree, for example on migration.

Some in Brussels warned that the Commission might be more cautious this time, given the implementation problems with Poland after 2023. But Commission officials must have concluded that Magyar stands in a stronger position, as he has a clear constitutional majority in parliament, and they are probably right.

The release of EU funds will only strengthen it even more.
