Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's chief negotiator and speaker of the Iranian parliament, said on Friday that the Islamic Republic secures concessions not through talks, but through missiles.
" We secure concessions not through talks, but through missiles; negotiations serve merely to convey them. We do not trust guarantees or words; only actions matter," the Iranian official said in X.
Iran and the United States are reportedly close to a deal to formalize a ceasefire and open the Strait of Hormuz. After the White House received news this week that Iran had agreed to the latest draft of a proposal to end the war, President Donald Trump told advisers he wanted a few days to decide whether to sign the upcoming agreement, officials familiar with the matter said.
It seems unlikely that Trump will sign the document before receiving final notification that Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has given his approval for the document, an official said.
However, Ghalibaf said no steps will be taken before the other side acts, signaling that Iran is waiting for the US to act.
"The winner of any agreement is the side that is most prepared for war the day after it is signed," he said.
The current document will extend for 60 days the current ceasefire, which has been under pressure this week as the US and Iran exchange attacks.
