"Prestianni Rule" claims its next victim at the World Championships,
Ecuador's Hincapie sent off with red card

Milan striker Santiago Gimenez became a protagonist in the 2026 World Cup, but not for a goal or an assist, but for an episode related to the implementation of the regulation.

In the extra minutes of the match between Mexico and Ecuador, with the score 2-0 in favor of Mexico, the second red card was recorded, given under the "Prestianni Rule", which prohibits footballers from addressing opponents while covering their mouths.

The first such incident occurred in the group stage, during the match between Paraguay and Turkey, when Almiron was penalised under the same rule. This time, it was Arsenal's Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie who was sent off.

At one point during the match, Hincapie nervously approached Gimenez and spoke to him while covering his mouth. The Mexican forward immediately signaled referee Slavko Vinčić, who, after being called to review the episode on the VAR system, decided to punish the Ecuadorian defender with a red card.
