Another "historic moment" off the field has been reached for the 2026 World Cup, which is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. As announced by FIFA, the match between France and Sweden held in New Jersey exceeded the five million spectators limit.
"The 2026 World Cup will make history during the France-Sweden match, when the total attendance at the tournament will exceed 5,000,000 fans, setting a new all-time attendance record," FIFA said in a statement. The record is now 5,048,079 spectators, including 80,663 spectators at East Rutherford Stadium.
The previous record was set in 1994, with 3,587,538 spectators in stadiums across the United States, while in the current World Cup, matches have attracted an average of 64,511 spectators, not counting the match between France and Sweden.
Stadiums had a 99.7% occupancy rate despite controversy over high ticket prices before the start of the tournament, which will conclude with 27 more matches.
The largest attendances were recorded for the matches Uzbekistan-Colombia, Mexico-South Africa and Czech Republic-Mexico (ed. by 80,824 spectators) at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
It is noteworthy that before the start of the tournament, FIFA president Gianni Infantino had stated that he expected a total of approximately seven million spectators.
