The European Union has imposed new sanctions on Iran, accusing it of restricting maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important corridors for global oil and goods transport.
The news was announced by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who stressed that the decision was made by member states during a meeting in Brussels.
"The Middle East is stuck between phases of peace talks and fragile ceasefires. Tehran's drones continue to threaten maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Ministers were clear that Iran's actions are unacceptable," Kallas said in a post on the X platform.
According to her, in response to these actions, European Union member states decided to implement sanctions against Iranian individuals and entities linked to the restriction of freedom of navigation in this strategic area.
"In response, EU member states in Brussels today imposed sanctions on the Iranians for restricting maritime traffic in the strait," she added.
Kallas also emphasized that this is the first time that the European Union activates the new sanctions regime specifically designed to protect freedom of navigation and maritime security.
