A preliminary agreement has been reached in talks between the United States and Iran, US officials said on Thursday, although President Donald Trump has not signed it, as Iran's leader has not signed it either.

Trump's approval will be key to any deal, officials have warned, and the president said the day before that he was not satisfied with the current state of the talks. It was also unclear whether Iran's Supreme Leader had given his approval, another necessary step toward ending the conflict.

However, the finalization of the text between the two nations was a sign that diplomacy was continuing, despite active hostilities between the US and Iran over the past 48 hours.

The Memorandum of Understanding would include the lifting of restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, including unrestricted navigation by ships and the lifting of the US blockade.

A 60-day negotiation period will begin to address Iran's nuclear program, including the fate of its highly enriched uranium stockpile. The sources said the most difficult issues related to Iran's nuclear program still need to be resolved as part of these talks.

Trump has previously seemed optimistic about a deal with Iran, only to change course later. US sources have warned that any progress in the talks could quickly be undone if Trump decides not to give his approval.

He has been under pressure from members of his own party, along with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, not to agree to a deal that would ease pressure on Iran.

Trump has sought advice to make sure the deal is strong enough, a person familiar with the matter said. He is fixated on ensuring that the agreement can be marketed as stronger than the 2015 Obama-era nuclear deal from which he withdrew.
