The Israeli prime minister stated that the army now controls about 60% of Gaza territory, while Hamas accuses Israel of violating the ceasefire and changing the agreed lines.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that he had ordered the Israeli army to take control of 70% of the territory of the Gaza Strip.
During an interview at a conference in the occupied West Bank, Netanyahu said Israel is "tightening its grip" on Hamas.
“We are now at 60% of the territory of the Gaza Strip. We were at 50%, we went to 60%,” he declared. “My instruction is to continue step by step, initially at 70%. Let’s start with that.”
According to reports, during his speech, part of the audience called for Israel to take control of all of Gaza.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had distributed maps to international aid organizations in late April, which showed that the army now controlled about 64% of Gaza territory.
A further expansion of military control would force nearly 2 million Palestinians to crowd into an ever-shrinking portion of the devastated coastal enclave's territory.
Under the October 2025 ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, Israeli troops were withdrawn to a dividing line known as the "yellow line," which encompassed about 53% of Gaza's territory.
Hamas accused Israel on Tuesday of changing this line, calling it "a continued undermining of the ceasefire agreement" and "an attempt to impose new realities on the ground through force."
According to Hamas, Israel's actions are aimed at strengthening military control over Gaza and preventing any real possibility for stabilization and reducing tensions.
